The following toolkit is proposed for a Toyota Landcruiser 70 Series.
This kit is not intended to include tools for repairing or changing tyres. Such tools are assumed to be available in the tools provided in the standard tool kit.
The kit represents a level above ‘basic’, but does not include more advanced bush mechanic items such as for welding.
The toolkit itself is made of fabric (e.g. canvas, poly or vinyl) to permit tighter stowage in vehicle. It contains the following:
- Set of combination spanners in metric sizes 8mm to 24mm – priority sizes: 8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 24mm.
- Impact sockets in metric sizes 10 mm to 30 mm – priority sizes: 10, 12, 14, 24mm.(Note, 1/2 drive is preferred as needed for differential servicing).
- Ratchet drive.
- Impact drive.
- Breaker bar – medium size.
- Socket extension approx 100-150mm.
- 10mm hex head driver (not an Allen key) – for front differential filler plug.
- 3 x shifting spanners – 300mm/250mm/200mm.
- 2 x multigrips.
- Flat-nosed pliers.
- Needle-nosed pliers.
- Circlip pliers.
- Crimping tool (basic).
- Screwdivers – Philips-head and flat-blade.
- Set of Allen keys.
- Knife.
- Pry bar.
- Punch.
- Small cold chisel.
- Hacksaw with spare blade.
- Tyre pressure guage.
- 54mm hub nut socket – for front wheel bearings.
- Rear wheel bearing adjuster tool.
- Oil filter wrench – optional if servicing is not scheduled during trip.
The combination spanners or sockets are needed for the items in this non-exhaustive list:
- 8 mm – for hand brake lever and skid plate.
- 10 mm – for battery clamps, and engine oil drain plug.
- 12 mm – stone guards, side steps, oil filter cover and engine belt tensioners.
- 13 mm – for changing air filter.
- 14 mm – for engine and transmission sump plugs.
- 24 mm – for rear differential and transfer case drain and filler plugs.
The following accessories are also to be kept with the toolkit:
- Duct tape – a.k.a. duck/gaffer/riggers/hurricane/100mph tape.
- Cable ties.
- Electrical wire.
- Electrical tape.
- Hose clamps.
- Crimps – collection of barrel/butt and spade connectors.
Additionally, the following tools stowed independent to the toolkit:
- Hammer – as a hand-tool, and for tent and awning pegs.
- Entrenching tool (small shovel) – principally for latrine duties.
- Longhandled shovel – for digging out bogged vehicles.
- Hatchet – for firewood and back-up hammer.
- 2 x Funnels – one for petroleum products, one reserved for potable water.
The following auto accessories are also suggested:
